This work is a set of variations based on the hymn “It Is Well with My Soul,” and draws its title from one of the original verses of the song. Horatio G. Spafford penned the text of the hymn after suffering the great tragedy of the death of his daughters at sea. The hymn tune was later written by Philip P. Bliss to accompany Spafford’s text.

These variations manifest a wide span of tones and moods in order to portray the sea of emotions felt by the hymn’s author.
